Lamprell gets to work on Seajacks rigs

By Upstream staff

United Arab Emirates player Lamprell Energy has cut the first steel for two newbuild self-propelled jack-up rigs, destined to go to work for Seajacks International in the North Sea.

The vessels will be owned and operated by UK player Seajacks, which has an option to build three further units of a similar design.

The Seajacks job is worth about $220 million, exclusive of options.

Work has begun a month ahead of schedule and delivery of the first unit is expected in the first quarter of 2009. The legged jack-ups will be used for well intervention and platform maintenance.

Lamprell also has a contract to build a $168 million LeTourneau 116E jack-up for US-based Scorpion Drilling.

The rig is due for delivery in March 2009, with Scorpion having options for a further four rigs.
