French leave for Grenade-3 probe

By Upstream staff

Mediterranean Oil & Gas has been given the go-ahead to start drilling the Grenade-3 well, on the St Laurent licence, in the Acquitaine basin onshore south-west France.

Mediterranean said the DRIRE Landes, the French permitting authority, had given its approval to an application lodged by its wholly-owned subsidiary Malta Oil and partners operator Egdon Resources, Sterling Resources and Nautical Petroleum.

The licence covers about 650 square kilometres and includes the unexploited Grenade heavy oil field discovered by Elf in the 1970s.

The Grenade-3 well is designed to confirm the oil column and subsequently, via a horizontal sidetrack through the main reservoir, to confirm the well deliverability via a production test.

If the well is successful, a pilot production project is planned using Quadrise Fuels’s MSAR process with options for a range of possible enhanced recovery methods, including carbon dioxide injection and sequestration.

Grenade-3 will spud in October.
