Australia’s Roc Oil has discovered a shallow zone of oil at the Massambala-1 exploration well at the Cabinda South Block in Angola.
Roc said the Explorer drilling rig had uncovered good oil shows over a gross interval of 39 metres, with log responses showing moveable hydrocarbons over a 20 metre gross interval within the zone.
Roc will now plug the well back and sidetrack in order to core the zone of interest.
This operation is expected to be completed within two weeks.
Once drilling operations at Massambala-1 are finished, the rig will move to drill Cevada-1 in the eastern sector of the block.
Roc boss John Doran said: “Because we are at the beginning of a big drilling campaign, it is essential that we try to nail the exact nature of the shallow oil zone at Massambala-1 as soon as possible because if it proves to be producible, the upside potential is well worth chasing.”
