Japanese steel for Gorgon pipes
Japanese steelmakers JFE Steel Corporation and Marubeni-Itochu Steel have won a significant pipeline contract for the Chevron-operated Gorgon liquefied natural gas project in Australia.
The contractors will supply 154,000 tonnes of DNV450 grade line pipe for the Gorgon and Jansz export flowlines and 18,000 tonnes of the same grade line pipe for the project’s domestic gas pipeline.
As the large diameter line pipes supplied for this project will be used for long distance subsea pipeline, they must meet low temperature toughness requirements and have heavy wall thickness sufficient to withstand operations under high pressure, along with anti-corrosive properties, according to JFE.
Chevron and partners Shell, ExxonMobil, Tokyo Gas and Chubu Electric are partners in Gorgon LNG, which is being developed as a three-train 15 million tonnes per annum liquefaction project. The Greater Gorgon gas fields offshore Western Australia have estimated reserves of some 40 trillion cubic feet of gas.
