Petrobras in fresh pre-salt oil find

Brazilian state player says commercial discovery made in Campos basin off Rio de Janeiro state

Petrobras has made a commercial oil discovery in the pre-salt layer of a field in the Campos basin off Brazil.

The state giant said the find at the Poraque Alto well on the Marlim Sul field is the first commercial discovery on the field within the pre-salt layer.

The well was drilled to a total depth of 4569 metres in 1107 metres of water, 115 kilometres off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

The well struck a good porosity carbonate reservoir with good permeability at 4420. Petrobras said the well struck 45 metres of oil, although it did not specify if this was net or gross.

“This result demonstrates the potential for new discoveries in mature basins, with production infrastructure already deployed,” the company said.

Floater owner SBM Offshore said just this week that it has sold the Marlim Sul floating production, storage and offloading unit for recycling after it was decommissioned.
