Brine spill in North Dakota

Officials work to determine whether release was contained at disposal well site

North Dakota officials are working to determine whether saltwater that was spilled at a disposal well site was contained to the location.

The release occurred at the Amanda Peterson saltwater disposal well operated by Great American Royalties in Bottineau County on 24 September, according to the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division.

Great American Royalties told the division that 470 barrels of saltwater had been spilled because of a tank overflow.

"The initial report indicated the incident was contained to location; however, Oil and Gas Division staff is working with staff from the North Dakota Department of Health to determine if the spill left location," according to a release from the division.

Results of soil samples are pending, the division added.

A state inspector has been to the site and will monitor any additional clean-up.
