Murphy takes the plunge off Congo

By Upstream staff

Arkansas explorer Murphy Oil has successfully drilled its Azurite Marine-2 appraisal well in the Mer Profonde Sud (MPS) block off Congo.

The probe was drilled in 4488 feet of water and a flow test produced almost 8000 barrels of oil per day from a single zone.

Murphy will now mobilise its rig to drill a new prospect, the Malachite-1 well, located in the same area of the MPS block.

As operator, the outfit carries an 85% working interest in MPS, which covers over 800,000 acres.

The Congolese national oil company, Societe Nationale Petroles du Congo, retains the remaining 15%.
