Dampier owners set to fund FEED

By Upstream staff

Owners of Western Australia's 1600-kilometre-long Dampier-to-Bunbury onshore gas pipeline have approved $1 million in funds for the front-end engineering and design for its fifth stage expansion.

The owners' executive chairman Stuart Hohnen said that the consortium, consisting of Diversified Utility & Energy Trusts, Alinta and Alcoa, were pursuing an early commitment to the proposed expansion.

He added that the pipeline was currently in discussions with prospective users for significant new demand which would support a further expansion of the pipeline.

Initial estimates indicates that costs for the fifth stage expansion could be up to A$1 billion ($738 million), more than twice than of the current A$430 million fourth stage expansion.

The fourth stage expansion involves the addition of eight compressor units and more than 200 kilometres of pipeline. It will increase the existing firm capacity of the pipeline by more than 95 million cubic feet per day.

The Dampier-to-Bunbury line is the only means of transporting gas from fields in the offshore North West Shelf to customers in the Perth region and to the mid and south-west of the state.

Operators such as Woodside, BHP Billiton and Apache are dominant users of the pipeline.
