Keppel scores hat-trick

By Upstream staff

Keppel Fels has won a repeat contract to build a third DSS-21-design ultra deep-water driiling semi-submersible for AP Moller-Maersk valued at S$415 million ($263 million).

The Singapore company said the contract follows the exercise of an option given to Maersk when it ordered two semis in May last year.

This order brings the level of new contracts secured so far this year to more than S$4 billion for the whole of the Keppel Offshore & Marine group.

Maersk Contractors chief executive Claus Hemmingsen said: “The increasing demand for energy will continue to spur growth in development activities in deep water. As such, there is a need for more highly efficient rigs to meet this growing need."

Maersk will supply the drilling and other equipment for the new unit, which is due to be delivered in the first quarter of 2010. The other two semis are scheduled for delivery in the first quarters of 2008 and 2009 respectively.
