Chevron seeds Georgia biofuels project

By Upstream staff

Chevron is to work with Georgia Tech's Strategic Energy Institure to develop hydrogen- and plant-based biofuels.

Chevron's California-based subsidiary Chevron Technology Ventures said it planned to contribute $12 million over five years to research.

Studies will focus on the development of transportation fuels from agricultural waste.

Chevron said it would spend $400 million this year on the development of alternative and renewable energy technologies.

The announcement comes a day after BP said it would spend $550 million over ten years to establish a biofuels research centre.
