Gazprom unit wins UK site

The proposed Saltfleetby gas storage facility in eastern England can be used solely by the owner, Gazprom-backed Wingas Storage UK (WSUK), British energy regulator Ofgem has ruled.

Ofgem rejected calls for others companies to be allowed to use the facility.

"The use of the Saltfleetby facility by other persons is not necessary for the operation of an economically efficient gas market," Ofgem said.

"We welcome the decision," Wingas Storage UK (WSUK) managing director Thomas Lehmann told Reuters on today.

The project in Lincolnshire still needs local government planning approval before WSUK can begin work, but the company is optimistic and hopes to open the facility in 2008.

"We are looking forward to seeing a positive outcome," Lehmann said of the planning decision.
