Total strikes desert gold

By Upstream staff

French supermajor Total said it had struck oil at its D1 well in Block NC 191 in south-western Libya, the first discovery in the exploration block.

The well, drilled to a depth of 1735 metres, tested at a rate of 675 barrels of oil per day, the company said. It said appraisal of the well and an evaluation of prospects for the rest of the block was underway.

Libya operates the NC 191 with a 100% working interest. It also operates the offshore Al Jurf field and the Mabruk field in the Sirte Basin. It holds a stake in a consortium operating the Sharara fields in the Murzuq Basin, it said.
