Ashgabat appoints new Turkmengas boss

Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has sacked a deputy prime minister in charge of energy issues, criticising him for slow growth in the sector, state newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan reported today.



Baymurad Khodjamukhamedov, 48, until now the head of state gas company Turkmengas, will replace Tachberdy Tagyev, who has been in charge of Central Asia's largest gas production company since February 2007, it said.

Turkmenistan has stopped selling gas to Russia, traditionally its main customer, after a pipeline explosion in April.

The two sides are now in talks over new supply terms as Russia needs less gas than before.
