Singapore to certify commercial divers

A recreational diving licence will no longer be adequate for commercial divers working in Singapore, following a string of mishaps in the South East Asian country.

The Manpower Ministry's Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC) wants such workers to be trained and certified from the middle of next year.

A consultancy has been hired to develop a safety and standards framework for the industry, which comprises about 30 diving companies with more than 100 divers.

The framework, said the council, will ensure that people in the industry are able to carry out their work on a 'safe and professional level'.
