Medgaz falls further behind schedule

Behind schedule: Medgaz pipleine

The Medgaz pipeline to send natural gas from Algeria to Southern Spain will be fully operational from around June 2010, a spokesman from the Medgaz consortium said today.

"(Medgaz Chairman) Pedro Miro told journalists on Saturday that tests on the pipeline will start in March and the pipeline will be fully operational around June," Reuters quoted a spokesman for the consortium as saying.

In June, boss of Spanish energy company Cepsa, Dominique de Riberolles, said the 8 billion cubic metre per year pipeline would deliver its first gas in early 2010.

Prior to that in May, chief executive of Algerian state energy group Sonatrach had said the pipeline would begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year.
