Coast Guard confirms Horizon sinks

The US Coast Guard confirmed the Transocean semi-submersible rig Deepwater Horizon has sunk, less than 48 hours after it erupted into flames during a surface cementing operation.

A Coast Guard source told UpstreamOnline the rig slipped just below the surface of the water at 10:20 local time.

The rig's sinking extinguished a fire that has raged since the explosion was reported, Coast Guard Petty Office Tom Adkeson told UpstreamOnline.

Adkeson said he did not know if boats would be able to approach the rig now that it was no longer ablaze, but added safety was of the utmost concern.

Video footage of the Coast Guard's efforts to douse the blaze can be viewed here.
