Chattak lawsuit returns to haunt Niko

By Upstream staff

Niko Resources has said that a group of plaintiffs claiming to be Bangladeshis are appealing against the 25 August dismissal of their $250 million lawsuit

The plaintiffs had claimed to be Bangladeshis affected by the two blowouts last year at Niko’s Chattak onshore gas field in the north-east of Bangladesh.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Texas, had also named the Bangladesh government.

Blowouts and fires occurred in January and June 2005 at Chattak, which Niko is revamping under a joint venture with national upstream company Bapex.

No-one died in either incident and there were no serious injuries reported but many living nearby fled their homes and there have been claims that land and livestock were destroyed.
