Set: for drilling off Cyprus says Turkey

Turkey will begin work on oil exploration around the divided island of Cyprus and may supply energy to the Greek Cypriot side, Turkey's Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said today.

"We will begin work on oil exploration around Cyprus and in our exclusive territory," Reuters quoted Yildiz as telling an energy conference.

"We are working on supplying the Greek Cypriot side with energy if requested," Yildiz said.

Turkey invaded the northern part of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus in 1974 after a brief coup inspired by the military then ruling Greece.

Cyprus is a EU member.

Oil exploration has been in the past a source of friction between Turkish and Greek Cypriots.
