Gazprom eyes Belgian storage

Gazprom signed a gas storage accord with Belgian pipeline operator Fluxys today, a move which may see the Russian gas giant take up long-term storage capacity in Belgium.



Under the memorandum of understanding, Gazprom will look at reserving long-term storage at Fluxys' underground storage facility in Loenhout.

The accord was signed during a meeting between Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Belgium's caretaker Prime Minister Yves Leterme earlier today.

Reuters quoted Aleksandr Medvedev, director general of Gazprom Export, saying: "The usage of underground gas storage facilities in Europe is a high priority for Gazprom as a way to ensure security of gas supply."
