BHP enters US shale market

BHP Billiton: The deal marks the Australian company's first shale gas investment.

Australia’s BHP Billiton will acquire US-based Chesapeake Energy’s holdings in the Fayetteville shale natural gas field in Arkansas for $4.75 billion in cash.

BHP Billiton Petroleum will become operator of the interests currently operated by Chesapeake under the deal, which includes existing net production of about 415 million cubic feet of natural gas equivalent per day.

The deal also includes about 197,082 hectares of leasehold and producing natural gas properties and midstream assets with about 420 miles of pipeline.

In an announcement, BHP said the acquisition would give it the second largest position in one of the largest gas fields in the world.
