Ballooning reserves: Marcellus can yield more gas than previous estimated

The Marcellus shale contains 42 times the amount of natural gas previously estimated by American scientists, new data from the US Geological Survey indicated this week.

The new data, released Tuesday, estimate that the rich shale play contains 84 trillion cubic feet of “undiscovered, technically recoverable” natural gas and 3.4 billion barrels of natural gas liquids.

The last estimate, in 2002, pegged the basins as containing about 2 trillion cubic feet of gas, the USGS said.

While higher than prior USGS estimates, the new data also tempered information from the US Energy Information Administration, which estimated reserves as high as 410 trillion cubic feet, Bloomberg reported.
