US fracking rules may come in a month

On the way: Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says fracking rules could be out in about a month

The US Interior department may issue rules governing the use of hydraulic fracturing within a month, secretary Ken Salazar said on Wednesday.

At a press event in Washington, Salazar asserted that fracking “is very much a necessary part of the future of natural gas”.

The controversial method of extraction has raised alarm among environmentalists who claim the technology threatens public sources of drinking water.

Fracking “can be done in a safe way, in an environmentally responsible way, and in a way that doesn’t create all of the concerns that it is creating across the country right now," the Christian Science Monitor quoted Salazar as saying.
