Considering Kazakhstan: High-profile hydrocarbon sites could become attack targets in future, risk experts warn

Risk consultants AKE have warned Kazakhstan could be a flashpoint for conflict after increased terrorist activity in the oil-rich central Asian nation.

The security experts said that “incidents relating to terrorism have been on the increase over recent months” in the wake of the country’s first suicide bomb attack in Aktobe in May.

A militant group known as Soldiers of the Caliphate carried out twin explosions in the town of Atyrau on 31 October.

The government has warned of the threat posed by religious extremism following these incidents, AKE pointed out.
