CGG kicks off Blackwood seismic

By Upstream staff

French seismic contractor Compagnie Generale de Geophysique (CGG) has started shooting 600 line kilometres of infill 2D seismic for Methanol Australia over the Blackwood structure in the Timor Sea.

CGG is using the Polar Duke to carry out the survey, which will be combined with the extensive 1997 2D grid over the permit to improve the structural mapping of Blackwood. The data will also help confirm the final location of the Blackwood-1 exploration well.

Meanwhile, Norway’s Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) has finished a 500 square kilometre 3D seismic shoot over Methanol Australia’s Epenarra prospect off northern Australia.

The data will confirm distribution and orientation of faults and fracturing within the 50-metre gas bearing fractured carbonate zone of the Epenarra prospect, tapped by the Heron-1 well in 1972. This data will be used to determine the best location for the Heron-2 appraisal well.

Both Blackwood and Epenarra lie in Methanol Australia’s wholly-owned permit NT/P68.
