Darling takes reins of UK policy

By Upstream staff

British Trade & Industry Secretary Alistair Darling is to take over the day-to-day running of UK energy policy.

The government said today Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks is to replace Lord David Sainsbury as science minister. Sainsbury is retiring after eight years in the post to focus on business and charitable work.

"The secretary of state (Darling) will be personally leading on it (energy)," a spokeswoman for the Department of Trade and Industry told Reuters.

The move comes as the government has put tackling climate change and energy security at the top of its priorities.
