TAG pipe ready for action

By Upstream staff

Austria's OMV has finished the 4 billion cubic metre expansion of the TAG pipeline, which carries gas from Russia through Austria to Italy, Croatia and Slovenia.

"OMV has successfully completed the construction of the pipes for the extension of the Trans Austria Gasleitung (TAG)," OMV said in a statement, adding that once the last part of the extension became operational in January 2007 the transport capacity would increase to 41 Bcm from its current level of 37 Bcm currently.

The extension was set to strengthen supply security and Austria's position as a hub for natural gas, OMV said.

The 380 kilometre-long TAG pipeline runs from Baumgarten an der March in the east of the country's to Arnoldstein at the Austro-Italian border.

The construction of two compression stations along the pipeline, currently under way, will further increase the capacity to 47.5 Bcm by end 2008, OMV said.

Italian player Eni owns 89% of TAG and manages the pipeline, with OMV holding the remainder.
