UK offshore regime 'could do better'

High, but can always improve: Expert panel gives its long awaited verdict on UK offshore regulatory standards

A long-awaited independent review has found that the UK’s oil and gas regime has high standards but identified a number of areas where there is scope for improvement.

Ministers in March commissioned a panel of experts headed by Professor Geoffrey Maitland of Imperial College London to review the UK’s regulatory regime following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the US Gulf last year.

Maitland said: “We have found a great many positives in the UK’s safety and environmental regulation, in what is generally regarded as a world-leading regime, whilst identifying areas where there is still scope for further reducing the risks of incidents occurring.
