Settlement negotiations: BP reportedly holding talks with US officials on Macondo settlement as trial date looms

British supermajor BP is reportedly locked in negotiations with US officials on a possible multi-billion settlement over pollution claims stemming from the 2010 Macondo blowout disaster.

A person familiar with the talks confirmed to Bloomberg the negotiations were underway, but declined to be identified because the matter is not public.

The source also confirmed BP was in settlement talks with other contractors tied to the spill.

It is thought that pollution claims over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill could yield fines as high as $17.6 billion if BP is found to have been grossly negligent.
