Ecuador court rejects arbitration

Ecuador: The Hague determination has been referred to the nation's Supreme Court.

In the latest sign that a dispute between Chevron and a group of Ecuadorean plaintiffs could drag on, an Ecuadorean court has referred an appeal by the US supermajor to the nation’s Supreme Court.

The court rejected an order by a panel working for The Hague's Permanent Court of Arbitration that an $18 billion award against the company should be frozen, Reuters reported.

"A simple arbitral award ... cannot force judges to infringe the human rights of our citizens," said the court, adding that abiding by the panel's order would be unconstitutional and would lead to the breach of international human rights conventions.

The panel told Ecuador last week to take all necessary measures to suspend enforcement of the award at home and abroad.
