Vote blocked: EU fails to reach agreement on oil sands

A move by the EU to label oil sands as particularly polluting has stalled after country officials failed to reach an agreement, a report claimed.

A qualified majority was not reached between civil servants from various EU countries during a meetings in Brussels on Thursday, Reuters reported, citing an unidentified source.

The news wire said there were 54 votes in favour of the proposal to label oil sands – also known as tar sands – as more carbon intensive than other fuels. However, there were 128 votes against and the same number of abstentions, Reuters reported.
