Feds lay out Macondo kill plan

Macondo flotilla: rigs and vessels work on plugging and mopping up the worst-ever spill in US Gulf

The federal government laid out a timeline for intervention operations at the Macondo blowout Monday that anticipates BP beginning the kill operation early next week.

Thad Allen, head of the spill response, said BP could begin the static top kill operation by 2 August, while the first relief well could intercept the Macondo bore by about 7 August.



Transocean semi-submersible rig Development Driller 3 is connecting its riser to the lower marine riser package and making preparations to re-enter the first relief well.



Crews had shut the well in with a temporary storm packer and pulled the drill string to about 10,000 feet below mud line in anticipation of Tropical Storm Bonnie.
