Unconventional source: China is targeting 6.5 Bcm of shale gas output by 2015

China hopes to make breakthroughs in shale gas technologies in coming years to support large scale production later this decade, as it strives for a higher share of gas consumption in China's energy mix.

The country aims produce 6.5 billion cubic metres of shale gas by 2015, or roughly 6% of its current total gas production, but it intends to dramatically boost output to between 60 Bcm and 100 Bcm in 2020, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said on Friday.

The targets, released in a five-year plan to 2015, were largely in line with earlier goals reported by state media, Reuters reported.
