PetroChina tops ExxonMobil in crude output

Bumped: ExxonMobil loses crown as world's biggest publicly traded oil producer

Chinese giant PetroChina has surpassed US supermajor ExxonMobil to become the world’s largest publicly traded crude oil producer.

PetroChina, formed 13 years ago by the Chinese government and listed in Hong Kong, reported full-year crude production last year of 886.1 million barrels.

That equates to about 2.43 million barrels per day, more than ExxonMobil’s daily output of 2.3 million barrels. PetroChina saw its crude production grow by 3.3% in 2011 while the US giant’s output slipped by about 5% for the year.

The Chinese company’s growth was driven by a concerted effort to boost production capacity at new and existing oilfields through improved technologies.
