Shell and Nexen add to Appomattox resources

Mapping potential: Shell and Nexen add 215 million barrels to Appomattox resource tally

Shell and Nexen have said that a new evaluation at their Appomattox deep-water play in the US Gulf of Mexico has yielded an extra 215 million barrels of oil equivalent in contingent recoverable resources.

Resources at the Mississippi Canyon blocks 391 and 392 compare to an estimate of more than 250 million previously made by Nexen.

The find – the third at the Appomattox structure involving the pair - was made this time two years ago in 7200 feet of water at the eastern Gulf blocks.

Calgary-based independent Nexen holds a 20% interest in the play operated by Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell on an 80% interest.

Last year, the duo recorded 325 million barrels of oil equivalent in the south of the fault block, adding to the 2007 Vicksburg discovery to the east.
