Campaign drive: Chevron aims to convince Romanians over hydraulic fracturing ahead of start to drilling activities on Black Sea coast

Chevron has pledged to spend the next year persuading locals in Romania that hydraulic fracturing is safe amid protests against the technique over environmental fears.

The US supermajor has said it will stick to gathering seismic data alone in the next year at newly awarded blocks on the Black Sea coast.

Tom Holst, country manager for Chevron Upstream Europe told Reuters any seismic shoot mounted by Chevron would be “designed and permitted to avoid areas of high cultural value, cities and villages and sensitive environmental habitats".

"Only after such a survey is completed would consideration be made to locate and permit a standard exploration well," Holst said.
