UN demands ‘immediate’ Sudan resolution

The United Nations has demanded an “immediate and unconditional” end to fighting between Sudan and South Sudan, calling on the oil-rich neighbours to draw troops back from border regions.

The call, issued by the UN Security Council on Thursday, comes after South Sudan forces stormed the strategic oil town of Heglig on Tuesday, seizing oilfields and reportedly shutting in production.

Fears have escalated this week of an all-out war between the neighbours which have largely been at loggerheads since South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in July last year. Both have been unable to reach an agreement on oil revenue sharing with the South taking with it about three quarters of the enlarged territory’s total oil reserves.
