On the offensive: Salva Kiir accuses Sudan of oil siphoning attempt

South Sudan has accused Sudan of attempting to build a “tie-in pipeline” to “siphon” oil in a move which eventually sparked the seizure of key oilfields by the former.

Facilities at oilfields in the border town of Heglig have been “largely damaged” following heavy fighting which preceded Tuesday’s occupation, South Sudan has also said, according to a report.

Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), which is controlled by South Sudan, stormed Heglig after accusing Khartoum of carrying out air strikes on its side of the border. The resulting conflict led the UN’s Security Council on Thursday to demand an immediate end to fighting and establishment of a demilitarised zone.
