BP and Macondo plaintiffs sign off on settlements

Two years on: BP and plaintiffs agree on settlements days before disaster's second anniversary

Lawyers for individuals and businesses who have entered claims for harm by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill have signed off on a multi-billion settlement with BP.

BP announced it had reached “definitive and fully documented agreements with the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee (PSC) to resolve the substantial majority of eligible private economic loss and medical claims” stemming from the disaster.

BP chief executive Bob Dudley said the deal "offers those affected full and fair compensation, without waiting for the outcome of a lengthy trial process".

The settlement is divided into two deals, one for economic and property damages and the other for medical claims.

As previously disclosed, BP estimates that the cost of the settlement will be around $7.8 billion, including administration costs and plaintiffs' legal fees.
