Driving revenue: Continental's output from the Bakken play in North Dakota

Oklahoma-based Continental Resources swung to profit during the first quarter of 2012 as output surged 66% compared to the same period a year ago.

The company recorded a net profit of $69.1 million for the three months to 31 March, recovering from a net loss of $137.2 million during the first quarter of 2011.

The return to profit came as revenues from oil and gas sales for the quarter increased to $535.3 million, up from $316.7 million a year earlier.

Driving profits was a surge in output which averaged 85,526 barrels of oil equivalent per day over the three month period, compared to 51,663 boepd during the first quarter of last year.
