China’s first deep-sea rig deploys this month

China: The rig would be the nation's first deep-water facility, according to Reuters.

China will formally employ its first home-made, deep-sea semi-submersible drilling platform in the east part of South China Sea on 9 May, according to reports.

The Ocean Oil 981 platform will be used to drill the Liwan 6-1-1 well, which has a water depth of 1500 metres and designed well depth of 2371 metres, Reuters reported.

Citing a report on the website of China’s National Energy Administration, Reuters said the drill was scheduled to take up to 57 days in a campaign that could mark the beginning of the country's deep-water oil strategy.
