Chevron to delay Gorgon decision

By Upstream staff

US supermajor Chevron said it would delay a final investment decision on its Gorgon liquefied natural gas project off Western Australia for at least six months despite getting the environmental go-ahead for the development from state regulators today.

Colin Beckett, the project's general manager, told the Wall Street Journal that additional work to limit cost increases on the project would delay final approval to mid-2007.

The Gorgon project is Chevron's largest-ever upstream project, targetting reserves of more than 40 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Western Australia's environment minister today upheld Chevron's appeal of the Western Australia Environmental Protection Authorities objections to a liquefaction plant that Chevron wants to build on Barrow Island, which is classed as a nature reserve.
