Elgin top kill: Operation with West Phoenix gets go-ahead from regulators

UK regulators have given French supermajor Total clearance to begin an operation designed to shut in a month-long gas leak at its Elgin well.

An executive with the company said last week the "top kill" procedure, during which heavy drilling mud is pumped down the well to regain control, could start as early as this week.

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change echoed prior reports that Seadrill's West Phoenix drilling rig would be the pumping vessel for the process, it said Thursday.
