Hyundai bags $655m BlackLion order

Hello, kitty: 'Lion' unit will be equipped with second blowout preventer stack

Diamond Offshore has ordered a fourth $655 million ultra-deepwater drillship as well as spare blowout preventer stacks for three similar units already on order, the company said Monday.

The Ocean BlackLion will mirror the three rigs that the global contractor has already contracted from Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea.

“We believe this new drillship along with our four additional units under construction—the Ocean BlackHawk, Ocean BlackHornet, Ocean BlackRhino and Ocean Onyx—will be profitably employed in the deep and ultra-deepwater markets,” chief executive Larry Dickerson said in a statement.

The newest rig is due for delivery by the end of 2014 and will have the capacity to drill in water depths of up to 12,000 feet.
