Origin drills Otway duster

Nothing but dust: Origin has come up dry in the first of up to six wells it plans to drill in the offshore Otway basin over the next two years

Australia’s Origin Energy has come up dry in the Thistle-1 exploration well in the Otway basin, off the coast of Victoria.

Origin said the well was drilled to a total depth of 2265 metres using the semi-submersible Stena Clyde but failed to encounter any hydrocarbon shows in the objective Waarre sandstones.

As a result it added it was now planning to plug and abandon the well.

Thistle-1 was drilled in Vic/P43 about 16 kilometres north-north-west of the Geographe gas field.
