Shale caution: Michael Yeager says BHP to scale back this year on US onshore rig count

BHP Billiton is to spend less than originally planned on its US onshore plays this year but should return with an increased purse in 2013, according to a report.

The Anglo-Australian mining behemoth is to reduce its rig count on shale operations in the country and wait for gas prices to climb from current lows, Reuters quoted petroleum boss J Michael Yeager as saying.

"Our approach is the same as everybody else's. We'll scale back, reduce rig count and wait," the news wire quoted Yeager as telling media in Australia on Monday.
