Total continues relief well at Elgin

Successful stop: Elgin and West Phoenix

Total is continuing with relief well drilling near the Elgin platform in the North Sea even as it confirms a long-running gas leak has been stopped.

The French major will continue to drill with the Sedco 714 until the G4 well at the Elgin processing, utilities and quarters (PUQ) has been fully plugged with cement, it said on Monday.

Total revealed on Wednesday that the gas leak, first noticed on 25 March, had been stopped via a top kill procedure utilising the Seadrill semi-submersible West Phoenix.

On Monday the oil company said: “Following five days of close monitoring of the G4 well, Total confirmed the success of the intervention and that the leak has completely stopped.”
