Dart wins CBM approval

On target: The approvals put the company one step closer to meeting its commitments.

Australia-listed Dart Energy has won regulatory approval for the drilling of pilot coal bed methane wells in PEL 458, north of the Australian city of Newcastle.

The company will drill four pilot wells at Fullerton Cove using horizontal drilling technology, targeting the prospective Borda and Medowie coal seams within the Tomago Coal Measure at depths of between 650 metres and 700 metres.

The lateral wells will each extend about 1000 metres into the coal seams, giving a total of 4000 metres of in-seam access to optimise gas drainage potential.

Each of the wells will intersect a vertical well with gas to be produced from there – meaning hydraulic fracturing would not be required, Dart said in an announcement.
