Gulf warned of possible storm risk

Tropical forecast: Chris first hurricane, Gulf advised of low

National forecasters are warning of a low-pressure area forming off the Yucatan Peninsula said to have a “medium” or 50% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next two days.

“Conditions are expected to remain favorable for development,” a bulletin from the US National Hurricane Center said. “Interests along the entire US Gulf coast should monitor the progress of this disturbance throughout the weekend.”

“Debby” is the next name in line this year for tropical storms and hurricanes.

The Atlantic's first hurricane of the season was born Thursday as Chris swirled off Newfoundland, but the Category 1 storm was downgraded again later in the day.
