EU nod for Baltic gas pipe

Swedish power company Sydkraft said on Monday a European Union study had approved the Baltic Gas Interconnector, a project to connect German, Danish and Swedish gas pipelines.

The feasibility study, which included a market assessment, a seabed survey, identification of landing points as well as offshore and onshore installations, estimated the total cost of the pipeline at 225 million euros ($202.3 million). The line is scheduled to come into operation sometime during 2004-5.

Sydkraft said others would be invited to join the project, soon to be organised as a separate company. Currtent partners include Danish power company Energi E2, Norsk Hydro, German gas distributor VNG-Verbundnetz Gas and Sydkraft, Reuters reported.
