Shell programme: Vessels depart Seattle for Alaska

Two rigs and support ships on Wednesday left Seattle to head for Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where they will await a federal decision on a high-stakes drilling programme in the US Arctic.

The Noble Discoverer and Kulluk will then wait for an ice-free passage into the Beaufort and Chukchi seas to the potential drilling sites, Shell spokeswoman Kelly op de Weegh said.

“The journey north marks the beginning of another historic offshore exploration programme in Alaska,” said said.

“We look forward to adding to our long, successful history in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas; providing jobs and verifying what could prove to be a significant and extremely valuable natural resource base for Alaska and the Nation.”
